Condoms in Secondary School? You Bet.

In 2002, the Australian Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing carried out a survey through the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society. The survey was the third National Survey of Australian Secondary Students, HIV/AIDS and Sexual Health.

Condoms For Teenagees

The survey was deemed necessary due to the high incidence of unsafe sex and unwanted pregnancies in Australian teenagers. If you want the full results, visit the Victorian Government health site called “Better Health Channel.” For the purposes of this article, we would like to provide information that is relevant to condoms and teenagers.

According to the study, half or 50% of the Year 12 students have had vaginal intercourse. Out of those who have had intercourse, 50% of males and 61% of females have had multiple partners.

The good news: teenagers are likely to use condoms when having intercourse. When asked about using contraceptives on their most recent sexual encounter, 64.4% said they used condoms. 36.8% used the pill. 11.8% relied on withdrawal and only 9.4% used no contraception at all.

While this is encouraging, there are some other studies with less optimistic numbers according to situations. Among teens who are in a relationship lasting a year or longer, 86% of them don’t use a condom every time they have sex. Half of those who are using the pill to prevent pregnancy don’t use condoms to protect themselves from STI’s.

Somewhere around half of all teenagers don’t visit their doctors for contraceptives until they have been active for 12 months. In 1998, among Australian women aged 12-24 years, abortion was the second-most common surgery.

25% of teenagers have had unprotected sex. Among Year 12 students, only 40% said they use a condom every time they have sex.

What it Means to You

If you are a teenager, it is important to use a condom every time. Failure to do so can affect the rest of your life. If you are a parent, encourage your child to be responsible.
